Yellowstone volcano: Earthquakes strike under supervolcano | Science | News

In the last week, there have been four tremors in and around the Yellowstone volcano.

Minor earthquakes occur in the Yellowstone area around 50 times a week.

The most recent quake came on March 11 when a small 1.5 tremor took place beneath the surface.

The strongest one, a 1.8 magnitude earthquake, came just hours before this, and people are concerned that Yellowstone could be about to blow.

Worried social media users took to Twitter to voice their fears.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Pray to Yellowstone caldera. We can end it all.”

Joey Brooklyn said: “Yellowstone is rumbling again”.

RyGuy said on the social media site: “Yellowstone’s gonna blow up and get us all”.

Meteorologist Tom Skilling moved to calm any nerves, and said this is actually an unusually quiet week for the supervolcano.

He wrote on the WGN news website: “Minor earthquakes occur in the Yellowstone area 50 or more times per week, but a major eruption is not expected in the foreseeable future.”

The Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano last erupted 700,000 years ago but experts say it should blow every one million years or so.

If the Wyoming volcano were to erupt an estimated 87,000 people would be killed immediately and two-thirds of the USA would immediately be made uninhabitable.

The large spew of ash into the atmosphere would block out sunlight and directly affect life beneath it creating a “nuclear winter”.

The massive eruption could be a staggering 6,000 times as powerful as the one from Washington’s Mount St Helens in 1980 which killed 57 people and deposited ash in 11 different states and five Canadian provinces.

If the volcano explodes, a climate shift would ensue as the volcano would spew massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, which can form a sulphur aerosol that reflects and absorbs sunlight.
