An Australian woman, Jenny Morrison, was returning to her home in Cairns from Elford Reef, about 50km east, on Saturday afternoon when she stopped to admire the sunset.
Ms Morrison took some pictures of the sunset over the Great Barrier Reef and when she later reviewed the photographs, she noticed something odd.
A small green dot can be seen moving slowly across the screen in the series of photographs of the view above Fitzroy Island.
Ms Morrison said: “There’s this little light, that looks just like a bit of water on the lens.
“I haven’t edited the photos, or done anything to them.
“When you look through the photos, though, the dot is in the middle of a saucer-shaped shadow thing.
“I don’t know how to explain it.”
“It’s so weird. It looks really real — like something you’d see on TV.
“It’s crazy.”
The mystery then deepens when in the latter pics, the green dot disappears from the images.
Experts are convinced that it is a genuine UFO sighting, with the Daily Star reporting that one expert said: “This is utterly bizarre and cannot be explained.
“I would say it’s an alien spaceship.”
The sighting comes just days after a supposed UFO was spotted in the skies above California.
The footage was captured in Rowland Heights, just east of Los Angeles, California, and shows a small white craft being followed by a larger craft.
The man behind the camera, who took the footage when he was driving, says in the video: “If it is an airplane, it is moving very quickly.
“I was driving when I saw it and I had to make a U-turn to come back to see this
“At first it looked like a cigar shape, right now it looks like it is almost a saucer.”
