Retired Colonel Charles Halt was recorded making the claim in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, while working on a documentary that was never released.

In the never-before-seen footage, recorded in 2010, Mr Halt is heard stating one officer “may have been abducted” and that the men were “unaccounted for” for hours.

It is thought to be the first time a claim of alien abduction has been made in connection with Rendlesham – dubbed the British Roswell – and Mr Halt did not state it in his official memo to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) at the time of the incident in December 1980.

Three US officers based at RAF Brentwaters claimed a “triangular shaped craft” landed in neighbouring Rendlesham Forest woodland in the early hours of December 26 1980.

The three – John Burroughs, Bud Steffens, and James Penniston, later told of feeling “static” as they observed the object’s flashing lights and hieroglyphic-like markings, sparking conspiracy theories from around the world ever since.

Mr Halt, 77, claimed the officers who first saw the lights and then a UFO “on the floor” could not account for a 40 minute period while searching in the woods when their communication systems went “off air”.

Mr Halt, who was base deputy commander at the time, was not present during the first encounter, but was told next morning.

He may have been abducted who knows… You know there is lost time, we know that.

Former British police detective turned UFO investigator Gary Heseltine released the recording made by his wife as he toured the site with Mr Halt.

In the video, Mr Halt says: “He may have been abducted who knows… You know there is lost time, we know that.

“They were not on the radio … You’ve got men out in the forest that you can’t …. unaccounted for hours.”

Mr Heseltine, 57, of Scholes, West Yorkshire, said: “My wife Lynn took quite a few video clips as we walking around the forest.

“It was only recently while watching them again that I picked up on the admission by Halt that Penniston and Burroughs had been missing off air ‘for several hours’.

“I did some research and realised that this admission had never been made public by Halt and so for the benefit of taking the case forward I have decided to release the clip.

“As someone who is just trying to piece together the events in Rendlesham Forest, I think it is in the public interest that they have a right to know such information and hence why I have released the clip.”

Nick Pope, a former investigator of UFOs for the MoD, said: “This is a bombshell statement, coming from someone who was Deputy Base Commander of one of the most sensitive military bases in the NATO alliance, at the height of the Cold War.

A more recent “UFO sighting” at Rendlesham woods taken by a local researcher.

“It’s one thing to see a UFO, as Halt and many of the men under his command did, but it’s quite another to suggest one of your men might have been abducted by aliens.

“A few weeks ago it would have sounded crazy for a senior American military officer to believe such things, but following the revelations about the Pentagon’s secret UFO project, maybe it’s not so strange after all.”

In December it emerged that the Pentagon ran a secret program looking at the threat of UFOs from 2007 to 2012, despite earlier claims it had no interest in the subject since the 1960s.

When approached by Sun Online about the video clip, Halt denied making the comments about abduction.

He said: “I never said anyone was abducted.

“Something happened to the first responders the first night (Dec 25/26) but what it was even they don’t know. We do know there was unaccounted time.”

To add to the mystery, Mr Halt said on the evening of December 27 1980 that officers had shouted: “It’s back, the UFO’s back.”

He went to investigate with a team who found three 1.5inch “impact holes”, damage to the canopies of trees and “higher radiation levels” in the “landing” area.

A plaster cast was later taken of one of the holes, but mysteriously disappeared from a box it was stored in.

He said soon after they saw a mysterious object in a field between the woods and a farmhouse with “a red light moving”.

He said: “It came towards us into the forest, moving, bobbing up and down in the trees. It was oval, about 100 to 150 yards away, with a dark centre and red around it.”

He claimed there were “sparks” coming from it and after a minute it “exploded and disappeared”.

They then spotted objects in the sky, 3,000 to 4,000ft up.

One was “elliptical”, but became a “full circle”.

Rendlesham remains the UK’s most baffling unsolved UFO case.

Alternative theories claim the lights came from either the Orfordness lighthouse, military tests, a helicopter carrying a dummy Apollo capsule, or was even a UFO prank by airmen that spiralled out of control.
