Russia designing POWERFUL LASER that will BLAST ‘dangerous’ space junk out of orbit | Science | News

The powerful technology is being developed by Roscosmos, a Russian space agency.

The laser cannon will be mounted on a large telescope that is already being built.

The telescope has been designed to look out for space junk, however, if the laser project gets the go-ahead, it will also have the power to destroy it.

The technology will use “laser ablation” to remove the trash from space.

The laser energy will heat an object with its beam until it gradually evaporates.

NASA has predicted there are at least 500,000 pieces of space junk “the size of a marble or larger” flying around in space.

A total of 20,000 of these pieces of debris are thought to be “larger than a softball.”

However, NASA says that even “a relatively small piece of orbital debris” can damage spacecraft.

The items can be identified because they are travelling at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour around the earth.

One strange object known to be floating around in space is a cosmonaut’s glove.

It is currently in a low-earth orbit, thought to be between 100 to 1,240 miles above the planet’s surface.

With more countries joining the space race, avoiding crashes and damage is becoming an increasingly important part of cosmic science.

In February Chinese scientists published a study that suggested that space debris could be blasted by mounted lasers.

Australia is also working on a similar project, but their laser is not designed to completely destroy waste objects.

Instead, the EOS Space Systems technology will “nudge space objects around and change their orbits.”
