THE pink moon lit up night skies last night across the world providing a celestial treat for lunar observers – here are the best pictures of the April Moon.

Cloudy skies may have blighted the view for some stargazers but others were fortunate enough to see a glowing orb in the sky for the last full moon of April.

The pink moon peaked at 8.58pm EDT for the US east coast and 1.58am BST for viewers in the UK.

The planets of Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter were also visible during the lunar event for those lucky enough to have clear views.

Excited moon gazers showed off their stunning images on social media sites.

Why is the April Full Moon known as the Pink Moon?

The name Pink Moon does not mean the moon is literally pink.

It comes from one of the first spring flowers, Wild Ground Phlox, which bloom around the same time as the April Full Moon.

Also known as Moss Phlox (Phlox subulate), the vivid flora are known for blanketing the ground in large quantities in the US.

According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name was used by early American immigrants who adopted the names from native Americans and incorporated them into modern calendars.

What other names does the Pink Moon have?

Other names for the Full Moon include Sprouting Grass Moon, Fish Moon, Hare Moon, Egg Moon, and Paschal Moon.

They also all herald the arrival of spring with grass sprouting, birds laying eggs, fish being more plentiful, hares breeding, and people planting seeds, according to

According to the astrological calendar, the Pink Moon is one of the most “magical” full moons of the year as it falls in the sign of Scorpio and signifies a time of renewal and cleansing.

The last full moon was on April 15.

The next pink moon takes places on April 19, 2019 at 12.12am BST.
