Strong and shallow M6.2 earthquake hits off the coast of Oregon, U.S.


A strong and shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.2 hit off the coast of Bandon, Oregon at 09:31 UTC (00:31 UTC) on August 22, 2018. The agency is reporting a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

The epicenter was located 265.2 km (164.8 miles) WNW of Lakeport (population 0), 275.5 km (171.2 miles) W of Coos Bay (population 16 182), 304.6 km (189.3 miles) WSW of Newport (population 10 268), 348.3 km (216.4 miles) W of Roseburg (population 22 114), 392.0 km (243.6 miles) WSW of Salem (population 164 549), Oregon.

There are no people living within 100 km (62 miles).

Some 1 000 people are estimated to have felt light shaking and 3 961 000 weak.

The USGS issued a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are highly resistant to earthquake shaking, though some vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.
