Shallow M5.5 earthquake hits near Kilauea volcano, Hawaii


A shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M5.5 hit the Hilina Region of Kilauea volcano, Hawai’i Island at 10:55 UTC (00:55 local time) on March 13, 2019. The agency is reporting a depth of 5.9 km (3.6 miles).

The epicenter was located 8 km (5 miles) N of Apua, 12.7 km (7.5 miles) SE of Kilauea volcano, 45.5 km (23.3 miles) SW of Hawaiian Paradise Park and 90.5 km (56.2 miles) ESE of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

There are 180 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles)

3 000 people are estimated to have felt moderate shaking and 104 000 weak.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was not large enough to cause a tsunami.

Hawaiian Civil Defence is asking residents to report any damage at (808) 935-0031.
