Sometimes, strange stuff forms in the skies.
Like this squadron of fluffy alien saucers over Puerto Natales, Chile.

The following pictures feature eerie, saucer-shaped puffs that seem to hang over the sky like UFOs.
Technically called “lenticular clouds,” the weird phenomenon seen over Puerto Natales has a simple explanation. And these so-called “UFO clouds” are nothing to fear.

Here’s how those UFO clouds form:
A lenticular cloud is a lens-shaped cloud that normally develops on the downwind side of a mountain or mountain range.
This occurs when stable, moist air flows over a mountain, creating a series of oscillating waves. If the temperature at the crest of the wave equals the dew point temperature, condensation occurs in a lens formation.
As the air falls down the trough of the wave, where the temperature and dew point temperature are not equal, evaporation occurs. Thus, a wave cloud, or a series of lenticular clouds, is capable of forming.

These special clouds are called stratocumulus standing lenticularis, because of their height and shape. Lenticular is a Latin word that means lens-like, another reference to their shape.

Lenticular clouds are often mistaken for UFOs because of the saucer-like shape. What do you think these strange clouds look like?
