Full moon 2018: In case you missed it watch the April Pink Scorpio Moon 2018 again HERE | Science | News

The full moon was hung spectacularly in the skies above Earth last night as April’s Pink Moon lit up the sky.

Star-gazers may have struggled to get a clear view of the moon as clouds covered the stars for much of the night, but many watchers were lucky to get a look.

Peaking at 8:58pm EDT, or 1:58am BST, the moon bathed the sky in the early hours of the morning.

The planets of Venus, Mars, Saturn, and Jupiter were also visible in during the lunar event for those lucky enough to have clear views.

Star-gazers had a real treat as the full moon shone last night. The name “pink moon” doesn’t mean the moon shone a pink colour.

It comes from one of the first spring flowers, Wild Ground Phlox, which bloom around the same time as the April Full Moon.

Also known as Moss Phlox (Phlox subulate), the vivid flora are known for blanketing the ground in large quantities in the US.

The name was used by early American immigrants who adopted the names from native Americans and incorporated them into modern calendars, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The Pink Moon is also called the Sprouting Grass Moon, Fish Moon, Hare Moon, Egg Moon, and Paschal Moon.

According to the astrological calendar, the Pink Moon is one of the most “magical” full moons of the year as it falls in the sign of Scorpio and signifies a time of renewal and cleansing.

The last full moon was on April 15.

The next pink moon takes places on April 19, 2019 at 12.12am BST.

The East Coast of the United States will have the chance to see a nearly full moon at around 7.30pm, according to Space.com, catching the view earlier than anywhere else.

The moon and sun will be in the sky at the same time for a short period of time in New York, due to the sun setting twenty minutes after the moon rises.

It takes the moon about 29.5 days to go through all of its phases meaning on average each month has one full moon.
