Next month, on the morning of Monday, January 21, the Full Moon will pass through the Earth’s shadow and take on a red hue. The astronomical event, ominously referred to as the , occurs twice a year but some conspiracists think it is much more sinister. End time preachers who read the bible for signs of the apocalypse have claimed the Blood Moon was prophesied nearly 2,000 years ago in the Book of Revelation. The Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, details the Moon turning “into blood” and the Sun turning black before the end of the world.

Christian preachers who follow literal interpretations of Biblical prophecy believe the January Blood Moon fits the bill.

Pastor Paul Begley, an Evangelical preacher from West Lafayette in Indiana, US, believes the Blood Moon eclipse is of particular interest for America.

Speaking to his followers online, the doomsday prophet said: “This Super Blood Moon is going to be a sign for America.

“You just don’t have a Super Blood Moon over the top of a capital of a country and entire hemisphere and it lasts for that one hour and two minutes.

“I’m telling you, it’s very prophetic – we’re going to be watching that.”

On the night of the Blood Moon eclipse, the Moon will enter the darkest region of the Earth’s shadow known as the umbra.

Sunlight bending around Earth’s sides will the scatter in the planet’s dusty atmosphere and fall on the Moon.

The effect is known as Rayleigh Scattering and filters out certain bands of light on the visible spectrum, leaving red and orange behind.

The exact same effect paints the skies red during sunsets and blue during the day.

However, Pastor Begley and his wife Heidi Begley are certain the Blood Moon is a prophetic sign.

Joining her husband during an online sermon, Mrs Begley said the January eclipse is of interest because it takes place around the time of the Jewish festival of the New Year Tree.

She said: “I think it definitely is a significance – do I know what exactly that significance is? No.

“But I think there’s definitely a significance that we need to seek out and seek the Lord about that.”

And pastor Begley additionally thinks the Blood Moon is prophetic because it arrives on the second anniversary of Donald Trump being sworn into office.

He said: “I absolutely believe for sure it is a sign for America. It’s the anniversary of the swearing-in of President Trump, ok, it’s the two year anniversary of that.”

There is, however, nothing to suggest the Blood Moon is a sign of the impending apocalypse.

As astronomer Laura Danly, curator of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, said: “Some people look at it as being a portent of doom. That is not uncommon.”

“But it really isn’t. It is the alignment of the Sun and the Moon.”
