Severe thunderstorms dropped heavy rain and hail on parts of Delhi NCR, India late February 7, 2019 (local time). It was a long-awaited rain after two weeks without a drop. However, as the storm pushed east a tornado formed and hit Faridabad, in the neighboring state of Haryana.

Strong winds and heavy rain caused traffic disruption while intense hailstorm dropped cherry-sized ice balls, covering the streets in white. 23 domestic and 9 international flights had to be diverted out of Delhi.

Almost 10 years have passed since Delhi saw hailstorm of such intensity, local meteorologists said.

While Delhi typically receives only 15 mm (0.59 inches) of rain in February, this storm dropped 30 mm (1.2 inches) in just one day.

The worst of the storm was seen in Faridabad, in the neighboring state of Haryana when a huge tornado formed and swept through the city. Damage reports mention a lot of debris on the roads and numerous motorcycles knocked over on the ground.
