Snow is falling across parts of northern Mexico and Texas, US on Friday, December 8, 2017, including Houston where the last measurable snow fell 8 years ago.

“What a memorable shift,” NWS Houston said. “We measured 1 – 1.5 inches [2.5 – 3.8 cm] of snow here at Houston-Galveston NWS office.”

The last time the Houston area received measurable snow was on December 4, 2009. This was also the earliest snowfall on record.

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Southeast Texas until 09:00 CST (15:00 UTC). Snow accumulations around 2.5 – 5 cm (1 – 2 inches) are possible, NWS said, urging drivers to use caution. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are also in effect for parts of west Texas, the western Texas Big Bend and for Texas hill country.

Weather stations near Alpine measured more than 15 cm (6 inches) of snow on the mountain peaks.

In addition to the wintry precipitation, some areas can expect very cold wind chills that can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from -1 to -4 °C (30 – 25 °F). Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

If you must travel in areas where Winter Storm Warning is in effect, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Sunshine should return Friday afternoon, followed by another freeze Friday night. However, precipitation is not expected by then.
