Deadly landslides hit Morona Santiago, Ecuador


At least 9 people have been killed and 8 injured after heavy rain caused landslides in Limon Indanza Canton, Ecuador’s Morona Santiago Province on November 24, 2018.

According to the National Risk and Emergency Management Service, 150 people were evacuated, 9 were killed, 8 injured and 5 remain missing. The landslides damaged 14 homes and destroyed 6.

Local media report several sectors of the Limon Indanza canton have been flooded.

The worst affected areas are La Merced and El Cuyero.

In addition, several transportation networks were affected in La Chorrera sector and Carchi Cantons.

According to Ecuador’s Instituto National de Meteorologia e Hidrologia, Quito received 238.4 mm (9.38 inches) of rain so far this month, making this November one of the wettest in recent years.

In neighboring Colombia, the Copacabana Mayor in Antioquia Department reported heavy rain and an overflow of the Aburra-Medellin river on November 26.

632 people were affected and 197 families lost all of their personal belongings, he said.

In addition, the following neighborhoods flooded: Machado, Asuncion, and Pedrera causing damages to hundreds of families and homes.

Landslides affected 91 families and more than 50 homes in El Peñol, Guatape Municipality.
