Deadly floods and landslides hit Haiti, Dominican Republic and Jamaica


Heavy rainfall affected the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica between May 2 and 7, 2018, causing floods and landslides and leaving at least 4 people dead.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) initially raised red alert level in San Cristóbal province, the Dominican Republic due to possible urban and rural floods and landslides, DG ECHO reported on May 8.

There is one death registered in San Cristobal, 773 houses affected, 3 865 people displaced, 40 people in a shelter in San Cristobal, 16 uncommunicated communities and 2 bridges affected.

Villa Altagracia in San Cristóbal province, Dominican Republic, recorded 121.4 mm (4.77 inches) of rain in 24 hours on May 4 while Kingston, Jamaica recorded 184.6 mm (7.26 inches) on May 7.

Heavy rain hit Haiti between May 2 and 6, with worst affected the districts of Artibonite, Grand-Anse, Nippes, North, North-East, South and South-East.

Three people died including a young girl, one person was injured and one person is still missing, mostly due to the rapid increase of the water level of rivers and streams. The death toll may increase in the coming days as assessments continue to be collected and consolidated.

At least 15 houses were destroyed or significantly damaged by the rains and landslides in the South, South-East and West departments.

The worst of the rains came down on Jamaica between May 5 and 7. At least 7 people have been displaced and are currently accommodated in shelters.

Severe flooding was reported in Aenon Town, along with some road and surface flooding in Westmoreland and St Elizabeths and fields and farmland were flooded in Bog Hole, Clarendon.

A landslide was reported in Silent Hill but no injuries or fatalities have been reported.
