Asteroid 2019 DG2 flew past Earth at 0.61 lunar distances


A newly discovered asteroid designated 2019 DG2 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.61 LD / 0.00158 AU (237 112 km / 147 334 miles) on February 26, 2019. This was the first of two known asteroid flybys within 1 lunar distance on February 26. 

2019 DG2 was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey on February 28, 2019, two days after it flew past our planet. However, it took 13 days for the information to become available.

This object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. It has an estimated diameter between 5.4 and 12 m (17.7 – 39.3 feet) and it flew past us at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 21.04 km/s at 07:39 UTC, 14 hours before 2019 DF.
