Severe flash flooding affecting Syria since the end of 2018 has affected more than 80 000 people, destroyed thousands of tents and caused concrete houses to collapse in Idleb and Aleppo provinces of northwest Syria. This area of the country has a high proportion of displaced people who live in camps and displacement sites.

According to the International Organization for Migration, one-quarter of food stock in the affected region was ruined in the flooding, causing many local shops and bakeries to close. This caused further food price spikes in area with already limited food available.

Roads were damaged and already poor infrastructure conditions have been exacerbated, IOM reports.

As a result, less than half of all school-aged children in flood-affected areas are able to get to their classes. In addition, any schools which have remained open lack sufficient heaters or fuel to keep the classrooms warm.

IOM said their assessment shows a critical need for winterization support. Their partner organizations sent 21 161 emergency support items and services to 18 internally displaced person sites. Replacement tents and ground insulation was provided for 3 500 affected households, among other help provided.
